5TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY // BEND, OR

FIVE YEARS MARRIED!!!

Original plans were to revisit Denmark & Holland but with Covid and flights being over-the-top expensive, we decided to spend some time exploring Oregon - something we also haven’t really been able to do with all the restrictions. We always heard how cute and cool Bend was and some of our favorite PNW Breweries live here.

Our first stop was a highly rated gastropub, Bangers & Brews. We were greeted by the owner who walked us through his menu and helped us order a Duck & Bacon and Wild Boar Sausage over their mac&cheese. I cannot express enough how good this was. This place is 10/10 and the best part is that the owner’s Father hangs out there and chats with everyone. It was so cute and personal.

After dinner we made out way 10 Barrel and Duschetes Breweries and walked along the Drake River before calling it night which was very quaint and peaceful sans the massive amounts of goose poop. No one warned us about that.

The first two nights we spent at an Airbnb in Tomolo, a quiet town 15 min outside of Bend. It was definitely rural but very beautiful and quiet. We napped, read & drank wine outside, and hung out the owners cat, Grey, who I liked to call Alphabet.

The next day we planned to hike Smith Rock: a very picturesque State Park with great hiking trails, rock climbing, and more. We chose to Misery Ridge for it’s views but it 100% lived up to it’s name. It was one the hardest hikes I have ever been on. And going down isn’t a blast either since it’s so steep but it had incredible views. Would probably do it again.

BUT the best part of the day was when we were driving to the park we passed Crescent Moon Alpaca Farm and we had to stop. This farm homes over 200 Alpacas of all ages, even 1 day old babies. We spent hours here feeding and petting them. I even talked to owner about buying some but now is not the time. This is another 10/10 most visit.

We ended the day dinner at Dogwood Cocktail Cabin, which was highly recommended by our friends and it was great. A nice spot of top notch cocktails and bites - get the Firecracker Shrimp!

Bend is also home to Sparrow Bakery, famous for their croissants, especially their Ocean Rolls. We enjoyed one of these as the best Chicken Waldorf sandwich I have ever had. There will be a line and worth the wait. Also, they do sell out so get there early!

After our stay at the airbnb we checked into McMenamin’s Old St. Francis School which we were really excited about. We got a lovely corner room in Art House that was just perfect. After grabbing a cocktail we immediately went into robe life and went for dip in their Roman inspired soaking pool. The roof is open in it which would be so cool to be in if it was raining hard or snowing. After, we roamed around the grounds visiting all their bars and getting stamps and locating all their secret rooms, including the Broom Closet Bar which is so fun.

Having visited and stayed at a few McMenamins, this is definitely my favorite for food. Though they all kind of serve the same food, their chef at this location does an exceptional job. You can’t go to Bend without popping in here and at least getting some tots.

All and all Bend was cool and we are glad we went but I would like to come back during off season. The one thing I didn’t mention was how crowded it was - EVERYWHERE. And lot’s of BROS. Water Sports + Beer = Bros. Also tons of Bachelor/Bachelorette parties but it come with the time of year. It also drizzled the majority of time which we coined Bendrizzle. It’s definitely clean, pretty, and has tons to do for everyone.

Thanks, Bend. We’ll see you in the winter.

10TH ANNIVERSARY // WHIDBEY ISLAND, WA

This past weekend Danny and I celebrated TEN years together! That’s a long time! Instead of just going out to dinner we thought it would be fun to explore more of the PNW and head up to Whidbey Island located in the Puget Sound (about an hour North of Seattle).

To get to the island we took the Mukilteo-Clinton Ferry. I had never been on a car ferry before and it was so fun! I know this is a normal thing for locals in the area but I thought it was the coolest thing. Being off-season, we did not get stuck in any line and it was a breeze. The island is only 3.1 miles across The Sounds so about 15 min total on the ferry though I wish it were longer.

We booked a few nights at The Captain Whidbey Inn, a historic hotel nestled under the firs along Penn Cove. The interior is dim but warm filled artifacts and antiques with furniture in rich tones. The hotel is broken up into three parts: The Historic Lodge and modern cabins which face the cove or Lagoon Rooms on the other side of the property. We opted for the Lodge since it looked extremely cozy and we love a place with history. Each room has multiple windows, a plush queen bed and a vanity area with a sink. These rooms do not have private baths but their communal restrooms are lovely and very clean. Our first night we stayed in room 13 which was more of a garden view and was located directly over the front desk. Since the Lodge is from 1907 and is not very sound proof, this ended up being great as there was a wedding at the hotel that evening, which was very sweet and made the evening more lively and loving.

That evening, we made a reservation at their restaurant downstairs. Due to the wedding also happening, seating was a bit tight in the dining room so they set us up at a more private table within the lobby for us where the chess board lives and it was PERFECT! We had just enough action from the wedding while still being able to enjoy each other and have a conversation. I had read some so-so reviews about the service and food but we had a great experience (thank you again, wedding). Our waitress was wonderful and food was great, too. They made me a delicious dirty martini and the cheese board is 10/10 MUST. We also ordered their clam chowder which is also recommend, their broccoli salad, calamari and fish & chips. It was way too much food and we put ourselves into a food coma passing out before 9:30pm.

Nine hours of sleep later, we walked around the neighborhood of Coupeville while having our coffees. The area offers a lot of Victorian homes which I loved and a ton of cute shops and restaurants. And dogs, lots of dogs.

30 min North of Coupeville is the famous Deception Pass State Park which is gorgeous. There are a few hiking trails you can take as well as beach access. There are also boat tours available to view the area from the water and whale watch during migration season.
Pro Tip: If you do not have the WA Discover Pass there is a $10 park fee for day-use and their CC machine was down. If you do not have cash you could try to find parking along HWY 20 but it can be tough and watch out for passing cars.

On the way up we stopped at the roadside Shrimp Shack for lunch. We thought we’d try something different and got their Oyster Burger. I would definitely skip this and go somewhere else in the area. It did not do much for either of us and some of the other patrons were very rude and they only provide porta-potties for restrooms. (There are public bathrooms at Deception Park)

Later that afternoon when we returned to the Inn. we found out we were upgraded to a new room, 7, with water views. I highly recommend you try to squeeze in a reservation for one of these. Though the garden view was quiet and serene, the water view offers sounds of lapping waves which is incredible to sleep/wake up to if you keep your window open like we did (the heaters in these rooms are very efficient and you will likely need to crack a window anyways).

We had dinner our final night at Front Street Grill after having walked by it during the day. Once again, the staff was incredible as well as the food. We kept it smaller this time with their Crab Dip and Green Curry Muscles. It was definitely enough foe two people and would eat here again. There was also the most stunning moonrise I had ever seen which we got to enjoy from our table.

The morning of check out the skies put on a show and it was a perfect goodbye. I cannot say enough good things about this place and hotel other than it might now be one of my favorite places ever. It’s a perfect escape from busy, city life where you can slow down, read your book in peace, make sweet conversation with staff and other patrons, have great food and drinks, and sleep soundly. Pictures do not do this place justice and hope to return year after year.

Happy TEN years together, Danny. I love you forever.

OUR FIRST WEDDING ANNIVERSARY // OREGON COAST

ONE YEAR MARRIED!

Holy cow that went by fast! And again, what a year it has been! (married/dog/bought house/moved to new state)

To celebrate, we decided to take it easy and do a weekend roadtrip trip down the Oregon Coast to explore more of what this beautiful new state of ours has to offer.

ASTORIA
Once I got home from work Friday evening, we piled into the van and set off west to Astoria! I've always wanted to go to Astoria - I mean because Kindergarten Cop and the Goonies, duh - but, also because I always hear about how cute it is. And well, yeah it was. I wanted to punch it a little. Steve was super excited to be back in VanLife.

We arrived just at dusk for dramtic views of the Astoria-Megler bridge which was literally next to our hotel! We stayed at this awesome, super cute place called the Atomic Motel which is as it sounds: Mid Century / Retro! Bonus: they even offer you free beer at check-in and there's a great little breakfast and coffee every morning. Would totally stay here again and would recommend! AND they are ESA pet friendly!

We didn't have much time in Astoria, but we made it to Fort George's Brewing, up to the Astoria column for some great 360 views, indulged in the most delicious fish 'n chips at the historic Bowpicker, and checked out Fort Stevens and the old ship wreckage. It was Steve's first time on the beach, so it was funny to see how he would act! It was so cute to see the sand between his toes! I think he liked it!

CANNON BEACH

From Astoria we headed south to Cannon Beach, another Oregon Coast town I've been dying to visit, and to see the Haystack in real life. And wow, it's so impressive up close! I mean just look at the scale of Danny & Steve! Our friend, Rachel, referred to Steve as a mini haystack. The beach itself is very popular, full of families, dogs, kite flyers, and beach bums. You can probably sit here all day and people watch. The town itself is also a very cute, cozy little village filled with cafes, local artisans, and bed & breakfasts. It is definitely a place I want to revisit and stay at soon.

CAPE LOOKOUT POINT

From Cannon Beach, we traveled a little more south to an area near Tillamook and Netarts called Cape Lookout Point, which  is a National Park/Beach with camping and hiking trails. They offer traditional tent camping spots as well as yurts and car/van/RV camping - so, we appropriately van camped because VanLife is the best life.

We BBQ'd, sipped wine and beer as we walked along the beach at golden hour, and made dark chocolate s'mores. It was kind of the best, and so low-key. It was exactly what we needed.

Since hiking is one of our favorite things to do together, we woke up early and tried out one of the many trails Cape Lookout has to offer. Although we did take a wrong turn and ended up on a longer trail (the Cape Trail instead of the South), it was a beautiful time with beautiful scenery, cool weather, and kind people. Steve joined us again in his little backpack and everyone loved it.

I kinda started to get all gushy and sappy on our anniversary - thinking back on the events of our wedding weekend and all the feelings. Getting married is such a special time. I know it's not for everyone and that's okay, but having all your friends and family around in one place at the same time for a few days is truly a dream come true.

It was a perfect first anniversary and I am so lucky to be married to this man.
Happy Anniversary, Husband. xo
